Chapter - 11 : Members and Leaders


In a group, there are different roles specifically  for each person in order to achieve the goals.

12 specific group task roles :

  1. Initiator-contributor
  2. Information seeker
  3. Opinion seeker
  4. Information giver
  5. Opinion giver
  6. Elaborator
  7. Coordinator
  8. Orienter
  9. Evaluator-Critic
  10. Inergizer
  11. Procedural technician
  12. Recorder
However, a group needs the following persons to build a good group and maintain the roles among the group members. 
  • Encourager
  • Harmonizer
  • Compromiser
  • Gatekeeper - Expediter
  • Standard seeter
  • Observer / commenter
  • Follower 
After group roles, 
  • Aggressor
  • Blocker
  • Recognition seeker
  • Self-confessor
  • Playboy, playgirl
  • Dominator
  • Help seeker
  • Special interest pleader ,  are  the roles for individuals who are within the group. 
To be a effective group
Interaction process analysis - analyzing the contributions of members under social-emotional positive contributions, social-emotional negative contributions, attempted answers and questions.

Ensuring effective member participation 
  I.    Emphasize team work
  II.   Avoid attacking others personally
  III.  Be open-minded to criticism
  IV.  Allow time for understanding
  V.   Discourage 'groupthink'

Leaders in Small Group Communication

A leader is the person who can influence and empower the others and the role of leaders is important ot the well-being and effectiveness of the group.

A leader's functions and skills are:
  • Be ready 
  • Activate the group agenda
  • Promote group interaction
  • Maintain effective interaction
  • Empower group members
  • Keep members on track
  • Ensure member satisfaction
  • Encourage ongoing Evaluaiton
  • Manage Conflict
  • Follow up
