Chapter-10 : Small Group Communication

Small group communication is the communication between two or more persons. 

The characteristics of small group involves:

  1. Collection of individuals - usually consists of 2-12 persons
  2. Common Purpose - having similar goals and objectives
  3. Interdependence - being controlled by one person's behaviour
  4. Organization of rules - having structure and rules within the group members
  5. Self-perception as a group - feeling and behaving as a part of  group
Team is almost the same as small group but it needs more cooperation and qualities such as: 
  1. Specific Purpose - set the certain goals and objectives
  2. Clearly defined roles - each member has different tasks to do
  3. Goal directed - work together for the same goal and achieve together.
  4. Content focused - generally more focused content focused 
Stages of Small Group

For these stages, there was no special explanation again in the class as it is the same as from CHAPTER-7. (Process of Conversation. 
Small Group Stages

The Formats Small Group include: 
  • Round table 
  • Knight of Round Table (from the series "Merlin")
    • sit in round or circle style
    • share information
    • informal interaction
    • leader try to discuss in specific topic
  • Panel 
    • very smart and skillful  members
    • informal participation
    • in front of audience
  • Symposium
    • like public speech
    • talk different sides of  a single topic
    • leader is important 

  • Symposium-forum 
    • prepared speech 
    • question and answer session (forum)
Power in the Small Group
   a). Legitimate power - responsible to make rules
   b). Referent power - the ability to get agreement (e.g. because of good attitudes)
   c). Reward power - ability to give rewards 
   d). Coercive power - opposite of reward power; ability to set the punishment
   e). Expert power - having expertise or knowledge
   f). Information power - ability to communicate and persuade very well

Types of Small Group

  • Idea Generation Group
    • share the ideas
    • brainstroming
  • Personal Growth Group
    • support group
    • for coping difficulties
    • Encounter group : makes the group members to express their feeling and  more  on psychotherapy
    • Assertiveness training group :  to improve members' self-esteem
    • Consciousness-Rasing Group : to join together and help together
  • Information Sharing Group
    • sharing knowledge to others for new infromations and ideas
    • Educational group : sharing knowledge between scholars
    • Focus gorup : focus on specific issues
  • Problem sharing
    • define and analyze the problem
    • establish criteria for evaluating solutions
    • identify possible solutions
    • evaluate solutions
    • select soulutions
    • Test solutions
      • if faild, try again
      • succeed, then continue
